Did you know that there are over 200 varieties of olives in Spain? All of them are catalogued and have unique properties that make Spain the country of the olive grove.
Among such a large number, there is a privileged ‘group of excellence’ which are used in the production of SIQEV EVOO, as they have unique organoleptic characteristics, such as the Picual, Cornicabra, Lechín, and Arbequina varieties, or the star of this article: hojiblanca.
In this article, we show you everything you need to know about the hojiblanca variety. It is a first-class olive with a high antioxidant content, making it ideal for the production of SIQEV Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Hojiblanca means Andalusia
The hojiblanca variety is named after the characteristic white colour of the underside of the leaves, which is light and striking like Andalusia -its land of origin.
The number of its olive trees are in the hundreds of thousands (approximately 260,000) and they are mainly found in the areas of Cordoba, Malaga and Granada, although it can also be found in the east of Seville and occasionally in Almeria and other regions.
Due to the outstanding resistance of its olive trees, the hojiblanca variety continues to be planted regularly, allowing those in love with its flavour to enjoy it in many of our SIQEV EVOOs.
A very beneficial olive variety for our health
The hojiblanca olive is as beneficial to our health as it is ideal for the production of SIQEV. Thanks to its high oleic acid content (over 75%) and the high presence of polyphenols, it is equally as delicious as it is healthy.
All this, in addition to its average stability, this variety produces the most recommended SIQEV EVOOs for regular consumption. They are fantastic for any type of dish.
SIQEV aroma and flavour
The true essence of hojiblanca can be found in its sensory characteristics. Its exquisite oils are full of nuances, such as herbaceous and fruity notes, with flavours that are often associated with tomato, aromatic plants, apple, grass or almonds.
Enjoying a SIQEV EVOO made from the hojiblanca variety is a unique experience. Its taste is sweet at first, with a slightly spicy aftertaste that surprises even the most experienced palates. In addition to having the best attributes that could win anyone over, SIQEV olive oil mills combine tradition, care and consideration, alongside differential quality, to make it an essential variety.
